Professor Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan was a guest lecturer at the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. He lectured the IIM students on the subject ‘Introduction of Contemporary Film Industry’ and spent over 2 hours interacting with them.

A source from the campus says, “Aamir decided when he was on the sets that he wanted to lecture. When he came to know of the newly-included ‘Introduction of Contemporary Film Industry ‘, he went to Ahmedabad that evening.”

Talking about the lecture, the source says, “Aamir discussed the business angle of Bollywood and how it has changed over the years. He talked about how the global recession is affecting everyone. He also talked about the start of his career and how he used to be confused when it came to selecting the right script and director to work with.”
Later, Khan also spoke about his journey in the industry as an actor, producer and then director. The source adds, “Aamir also discussed his flop films.”

Aamir spokesperson confirms this saying, “Aamir did visit the IIM Ahmedabad campus. Now he is busy shooting for 3 Idiots in Bangalore. He doesn’t like being disturbed when he is on the sets.”

According to the source, Khan is not the first Bollywood star to lecture on this subject. “Directors Sanjay Gadhvi and Apoorva Lakhia have also come to the campus in connection with the same course. Among the other invitees are Farhan Akhtar, Madhur Bhandarkar, Mahesh Bhatt, Karan Johar, Kamal Hassan and Vidhu Vinod Chopra,” says the source.

About the ‘Introduction of Contemporary Film Industry’ course, Aamir was a visiting faculty for an elective course on ‘Introduction to Contemporary Film Industry’. This course can be done by 2nd year students of the institute’s post-graduate diploma programme. The course covers production, economics and marketing. In short, the business and financial aspect of the film industry.

Aamir takes a year off!

After a spectacularly successful performance in Ghajini, Aamir Khan has finally decided to do what he was planning for quite a while.

He's taking a full year off from acting and movies, his astronomical fee of Rs 30 crore or 33 per cent of a film's profit notwithstanding.

A source close to Aamir spills the beans, “It is true that Aamir is finally taking a year off after Raj Kumar Hirani's 3 Idiots is complete. He is currently in Bangalore shooting for the film. Actually, he was planning to take a sabbatical last year after Taare Zameen Par, where the double responsibility of directing and acting sapped him. But then he was coaxed into doing Ghajini and then began his physical reorientation, the muscle-building and body-toning that really exhausted the method actor. But Aamir is now ready to take the long-pending break. He won't be doing any films for the next one year.”

Though Aamir is taking time off from work to travel, read scripts, watch films and spend time with his children; his production house, Aamir Khan Productions, will function uninterrupted. The filming of Abhinay Deo's Delhi Belly and Kiran Rao's Dhobi Ghat will not be affected. Work, however, will have to wait.

Do Stars really live up to their names

They say the name of a child determines the way they live the rest of their lives. So when Prithviraj Kapoor names his son Raj, years later Raj Kapoor did in fact rule Bollywood. Kishore means a ‘young boy’ and if we look at Kishore Kumar this can’t be truer for anyone else!

We take a look at our current lot of top Bollywood actors and see whether they have kept true to their name:

Shah Rukh Khan - The Face of a King
SRK is the closest that anyone can come to living their name. His mother may have named him thinking that he had the face of a King and today millions of fan all over the world agree. No wonder then the superstar is living the life of a true king – big palatial homes, hit movies, huge bank balance and a reign in Bollywood that is truly King size!

Hrithik Roshan – From the Heart
Known to take decisions instinctively and working from the heart and not the head are some of the ways that one can describe this light eyed superstar. Hrithik shot to super stardom with just his first film Kaho Na Pyaar Hai. And after that there has been no looking back for him. Working in films that are produced by papa Rakesh, Hrithik is definitely working from the heart and not by the bank balance!

Akshay Kumar - Eternal, immortal, indestructible
Khiladi Kumar’s name signifies what we have seen Akshay do in his nineteen years in the industry. Fight the odds, kick some serious butt in his films and perform death defying stunts have been synonymous with Kumar’s films. And despite coming from a family with no connection in Bollywood, Akki has gone on to become one of the most successful and richest stars at the Bollywood box office!

Aamir Khan – Prince, Ruler or Commander
Aamir falls a little short of Shah Rukh. While SRK’s name means the face of a king, Aamir’s name means a prince or a commander. And don’t we know all about it! The actor has managed to maintain his command in Bollywood. In a highly competitive industry, Khan stuck to his guns and only worked in one film a year and he has yet created his niche in the industry. For many he is the rules of Bollywood.

Salman Khan – Protector, Conqueror
Salman’s means to protect or conquer. And in the case of the man we all love to hate, this definitely holds true. The actor is extremely protective of all the people in his life. Whether it was his mother, sister, lover or ex-girlfriends, the actor has always been fiercely protective. And at the same time he has loved conquering the women that most men knew were definitely out of their reach!
Another connotation of Salman is also peace and don’t we all know about Salman’s passion for world peace. No wonder he started the Being Human Foundation!

Farhan Akhtar – Merry, Happy
Bollywood’s latest poster boy Farhan’s name means to be happy. And have we ever seen Farhan not smiling? The actor-director has an amazing sense of humour, is the life of the party and is one of the most loved people in the industry.

Aamir to make a film on farmers’ plight

Aamir Khan is all set to produce a film on the farmers’ plight in Bhopal. The actor has signed on Anusha Rizvi as director and Raghubir Yadav who starred with Khan in Lagaan will play the lead.

“The plot of the movie deals with a reporter’s journey to fight for the plight of farmers in the region. It deals with the issues of farmers’ suicide,” says a source from the sets.

The filming for the project has already begun in Bhopal.

“Large amount of the film is based on Anusha’s life. She was a journalist who had visited the region before she decided to turn director,” adds the source.

Few years back the actor-producer was embroiled in a controversy with the Gujarat government following his comments on the rehabilitation of farmers displaced by the Sardar Sarovar Project.

It is learnt that his new film will raise the issue of the state of farmers and their exploitation.

Aamir Khan’s up for sale!

Pleased with the success of Ghajini, the makers of the film have found a unique way to share it with the fans — they can now take Aamir Khan in his muscled Ghajini look home.

Well, not the real Aamir, but his figurine that is. An insider informs, “It was producer Madhu Mantena’s idea to make the Aamir Khan-Ghajini look into a collector’s item.” It’s common knowledge that Aamir had worked out for over a year to acquire his hulk-like physique.

A source close to Aamir confirmed, “Great pains have been taken to capture Aamir’s exact muscular texture and structure in Ghajini.” Well, Aamir’s kiddie fans will certainly throng for this one. After, all what better way to pocket your favourite star, right Aamir?

Aamir Khan’s flattered by cool Katz!

So Ghajini has become the biggest grossing movie in the shortest possible time span? Hmmnn! Why aren’t we surprised? ‘Coz its Aamir boy who wore the ‘thinking cap’ (he probably has it screwed on) for the promotional blitzkrieg.

No wonder this Khan has audiences of all shapes, sizes and ages wrapped around his muscled finger (or is it his entire body?). Not only the junta, even industry folks (hot babes with boyfriends included) are in awe of Aamir’s sense of perfection. Recently during an interview with us, Katrina Kaif commented that Aamir Khan has the best body in the business. We’re sure AK must’ve been maha-khush on hearing this, though in his usual nonchalant style he told us, “I’m flattered by what Katrina said.

If you ask me, I like John’s physique. I think he has a great body. I only did what was required for my role. I think Salman has got a great physique, too.” Aha ... we’re sure Sallu will love the latter part of Aamir’s response, but the bit about Johnny boy? We sooo doubt that he’ll agree with his dost. For ‘butt’ obvious reasons, na?

Aamir blogs after a long time

Aamir Khan has finally posted a new entry on his blog, after a considerable period of time.

According to Aamir he stopped blogging because he did not want to use it as a medium to get publicity for “Ghajini”.

“The sad thing about that is, that then, I don't end up sharing with you a lot of the process and what I am feeling at that time. Films are my life and I would like to share it first hand... So henceforth, I am not going to bother about that," he wrote.

I can't tell how happy I am: Aamir

He doesn't have to travel so he gets enough time to play and sleep. Bollywood perfectionist Aamir Khan says he is having the time of his life while shooting for Rajkumar Hirani's "3 Idiots" at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) campus in Bangalore.

“I am having a great time shooting at IIM Bangalore (IIMB). Since, I am staying on the campus, I save on travel time and as a result I am finally getting to sleep. I can't tell how happy I am,” Aamir posted on his blog on Friday.

“Raju is an absolute delight to work with and so are the rest of the cast and crew. I'm really enjoying playing badminton, tennis and chess with the students here,” he added.

Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film is based on Chetan Bhegat's bestseller “Five Point Someone” and also stars Sharman Joshi and R. Madhavan in the lead apart from Aamir.

Posting for the first time after the release of his worldwide grosser “Ghajini” that raked in around Rs.2 billion worldwide, the star also thanked his fans for their support.

“I am so happy that the film has gone down so well with audiences. I am thrilled with the big opening that the film got and the kind of history it created at the box office. I am touched and deeply moved by the faith you have shown in me. Thank you,” he wrote.

The actor is also catching up on the times of yore as he is reading Ramchandra Guha's “India After Gandhi”.

Taare Zameen Par does not go forward at Oscars

Nine films have advanced to the next round of voting in the foreign language film category for Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced.

The list includes the recent Golden Globe winner for foreign language film, the acclaimed Israeli animated documentary "Waltz with Bashir", about the country's invasion of Lebanon in 1982, as well as the German film the "Baader Meinhof Complex", a unique look into that country's notorious terrorist group, the Red Army Faction.

The other seven films are "Revanche" (Austria), "The Necessities of Life" (Canada), "The Class" (France), "Departures" (Japan), "Tear This Heart Out" (Mexico), "Everlasting Moments" (Sweden) and "3 Monkeys" (Turkey).

The films were chosen by a committee of several hundred Academy members and will be whittled down to five 2008 nominees by specially selected committees in New York and Los Angeles. The committee members will spend this Friday, Saturday and Sunday viewing three of the films each day before the nominations are announced on January 22.

This means it’s the end of the run for Aamir Khan-directed movie, “Taare Zameen Par”, which was India’s official entry in this category.

The Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2008 will be presented on February 22, 2009.

The golden statue that Aamir Khan got at Ghajini's success party

Producers have strange ways of making their leading men happy at the end of a film so that they are open to doing another film.

Ghajini producer Madhu Mantena outdid himself by presenting a solid-gold statue designed specially to resemble Aamir's Ghajini look at the party held to celebrate the film's success earlier this week.

"8 abs included," says Mantena proudly. We didn't know it was 8 abs. "It is and we can see all 8 of them on the statue," he states.

The statuette is pure gold and probably cost the producer close to Rs. 70-80 lakhs though he isn't telling.

"It has certain amount of other metal to make it malleable. Solid gold wouldn't allow the identical Ghajini shape to be done in gold. But the idea was to create an Oscar-sized statue exclusively for Ghajini. Aamir knew he was getting a trophy. But he didn't know it would be golden and with his Ghajini's look. He was overwhelmed," says Mantena.

So now a second project featuring the Ghajini actor-producer is pucca. To make sure he doesn't feel bad, director Murugadoss was also given a statue. Though we hear his was far less hefty and golden than Aamir's. But yes, the 8-abs were there for Muruga too.

Aamir's flying visit to Mumbai

His current shooting schedule is so tight that Aamir Khan is not being able to spare more than an hour for the success bash of his film “Ghajini”.

Aamir is currently shooting on the campus of IIM Bangalore for his upcoming film “3 Idiots”, directed by Rajkumar Hirani.

The permission to shoot inside the premises has reportedly being obtained on the recommendation of Mukesh Ambani.

As the shooting schedule has to be in accordance with the students' timetable, Aamir does not want to waste a single minute of the unit’s time.

Meanwhile, the “Ghajini” team has been keen to have a celebration as the film has crossed the 200-crore collection mark. Obviously they wanted Aamir to be a part of the party.

Initially, Aamir had refused but when the team asked him to decide the date and time of the celebration as per his convenience, Aamir chose January 12, and agreed to come on one condition – he’ll be at the party for only an hour.

And, while he’s on a flying visit to Mumbai, he’s also expected to stop by and wish nephew Imran Khan, who celebrates his birthday on January 13.

GHAJINI takes an 'abnormal' route, a week away from 100 crores mark

A 50% fall in collections on a per week basis is considered healthy for a film which opens well at the box office. The biggest of the hits/superhits and the best of the films see such drop in collections but there are no complaints whatsoever since this is considered to be absolutely 'normal'.

But what does one say about a film which does as much as 1.5 times the business of an 'all time opener' in it's first week? How much of the fall is 'normal' enough?

After making so much of moolah in its first week does it still have to follow an industry standard or a 50% fall?

Should there be a 'concession' of sorts because of high revenues in the first week and hence a 60% fall should be considered decent enough?

And in the 'unbelievable' scenario of a film actually seeing a sub-50% fall, should it be considered simply 'abnormal'?

Well, this is how the performance of GHAJINI should be best described i.e. 'abnormal'! After raking in as much as 64 crores in it's first week (good enough to be the life time business of the biggest of the hits), the Aamir Khan starrer hasn't stopped yet. It has gone on and on even in its second week as well, so much so that it now finds itself in the elite list of blockbusters in two weeks flat. The film has garnered an astonishing 26 crores plus at the box office in the week gone by, hence making the collections stand over 90 crores.

In the process of doing so, it has not just gone past the biggest money spinner of recent times OM SHANTI OM in a fortnight itself, it is also finding itself in the company of all time money spinners like GADAR-EK PREM KATHA and DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYENGE.

While records have been created in its second week run, one wonders how the third week would look now considering the fact that majority of those who had to see the film due to the initial hype have already seen it. It's time now for majority of audience to comprise of repeat audience and while anything that comes from here on is a huge bonus in itself, it can be rest assured that by the end of it's third week, GHAJINI would have crossed the 100 crore milestone.

The first ever movie to be doing so (without considering the films that have their total adjusted with inflation taken into account), GHAJINI is just days away from history being created. Quite a monumental time for the industry when there is one more film running in the theaters that goes by the name of RAB NE BANA DI JODI. This 'relatively' smaller film (in scale, grandeur, setting, budget and publicity) too has crossed 80 crores in its four week run and is still counting. With as much as 170 crores coming back to the industry in just a month and a half, it can be said that celebration times are here again.

Now here is looking forward to CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, another biggie that should bring in at least 70 crores more to the industry even if it is reasonably well made. Here is to you Akshay.

Slimline Aamir misses working out

Dropping weight rapidly for his new role in 3 Idiots, the star has stopped hitting the gym.

Aamir Khan has stopped the intense workouts that brought him Ghajini's 8-pack abs - and he says that he misses the intensity of gymming. The actor, currently working for his new film 3 Idiots is rapidly losing weight - and muscle in the process - as he tries to fit into the role of a man in his early 20s.

"For three months now he has not been working out, or working out as heavily because he has to look thinner," said the man who built Aamir's body for him, Satyajit Chourasia. Aamir aims to have a weight of 68 kilos for the new look. For this the star has dropped the weight training but is keeping on the regime that Satyajit gave him to keep himself lean. "He is just doing normal cadio exercises which are essential to remain fit," Satyajit said.

Cardio exercise refers to any motion that raises the heart rate of the body and makes it consume more oxygen. This in turn makes the body break down its fat. Running, cycling and kipping are the three most common cardio exercises.

"Aamir is also following the same diet plan I had given him," Satyajit said. The star acknowledged the role of a good diet in building his body, saying that he attributed 50 per cent of his new body to what he ate.

At the Ghajini success party last week, Aamir told Satyajit that he had been missing the intensity of the workouts they had shared together. "He also discussed his diet plan," Satyajit said, "he is not consuming alcohol or cigarettes because they're not in the diet."Praising his student, Satyajit added: "After having done the diet for a year, he has become a perfectionist."

The star is playing the role of Ryan, an IIT student in the movie directed by Raju Hirani. Based on the novel 5 Point Someone, it is due for release in May this year.

Aamir praised for supporting no-smoking campaign

Director A.R. Murgadoss and actor Aamir Khan, who are riding on the success of "Ghajini", are being lauded by National Organisation for Tobacco Eradication (NOTE) for cinematically endorsing and propagating the no-smoking ban in the action thriller.

The scene in "Ghajini", which has drawn accolades from the anti-smoking lobby, shows Aamir, who is prodded on by his girlfriend into beating up hooligans who insist on smoking in a public place.

"We thank Murugadoss and Aamir Khan for highlighting such an important fact even though we certainly do not favour any violence against smokers," Subhash Salkar, general secretary of NOTE, wrote in a letter of appreciation to Aamir.

Salkar said in the letter, dated January 7, that research shows that more often film stars inspire children to puff on their first cancer stick.

"Fifty two percent children have their first puff of a cigarette after watching a celebrity light up. We recognise that just as non-smokers are victims of exposure to second hand smoke from smoker, smokers are victims of tobacco industry and they require assistance in quitting their tobacco addiction," he wrote.

He added that that a simple administrative order stopping depiction of smoking in films would prevent 50 percent of the viewers from becoming smokers.

NOTE in the past has dragged Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Amitabh Bachchan to court for promoting smoking on screen.

Right now Ajay Devgan has landed in trouble for smoking in public. A Chandigarh-based NGO on Tuesday filed a complaint against Ajay for allegedly smoking at a public place.

Dil chahta hai, again

If all goes well, Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta will star together in Yash Chopra’s next.

While Preity has taken the signing amount from the Yash Raj camp, Aamir is in advanced talks with YRF.

Our source from YRF said, “The script penned down by Yash Chopra is ready. And like all Chopra films, this one promises to be a romance as well. And as seen in earlier films directed by Yash Chopra, it is the heroine who plays a crucial role in it. The story demanded a heroine exuding absolute purity and innocence and Yash Chopra has roped in Preity for it. The story encapsulates the journey of two strangers who meet and share deep love in old age too.”

Our source added, “Preity has already marked out dates for this yet-untitled film. Yash Chopra plans to start shooting in July and finish shooting in one schedule. The film is expected to hit the theatres in December.”
Yash Chopra has Aamir Khan in mind for the male lead. Our source said, “There are talks on with Aamir currently. Yash Chopra was impressed with the magic that Aamir and Preity had created in Dil Chahta Hai. Therefore he is keen to have the two in this film.”

Tamil GHAJINI is a HIT.... Again!

Guess what! GHAJINI, which was originally made in Tamil and released to a bumper response all over, is a BIG HIT all over again. And the film has Aamir Khan's Hindi version of the movie to thank! Ever since the GHAJINI mania intensified close to 4 weeks back, curiosity started building up for the original Tamil film as well. So much so that there have been an onslaught of enquiries about the film. Due to huge demand for the film's DVDs, massive reordering was called for in the weeks to follow.

Says the owner of a prominent music retail chain in Bangalore, "Even though people in South have already seen the movie in it's Tamil as well as the dubbed Telugu version, there are repeated queries about the film's DVDs. We have had to order fresh lot of GHAJINI because of such heavy demand. Since they are priced at a mere Rs. 150/=, the DVDs are going off the shelves like hot cakes."

It is not only the South Indian audience that is re-looking at comparing the Hindi version with the Tamil original. Even those who have seen the film for the first time with Aamir Khan in the lead are curious to see how did the South version look like? Especially so, since the two films boast of entirely different climax sequences. Also, Pradeep Rawat, the man who plays the title role of GHAJINI, is in double role in the film, an angle that was eliminated in the Hindi version.

Says Suruchi Sancheti, a college lecturer, "I can't understand a word of Tamil but for me watching it all over again is an interesting preposition because I want to see what was it that prompted Aamir to act in the remake. I have heard great things about the movie and have somehow laid my hands on the film's DVD. Thankfully, with English subtitles, I should be able to have fun and be entertained."

Released in 2005, Tamil version of GHAJINI also starred Asin, Nayantara and Riyaz Khan.

Aamir assists accident victim

Earlier this week, while on his way to a studio for an interview, Aamir Khan witnessed a hit and run accident in Mumbai. The victim, an elderly man, was left unattended on the road.

Aamir generally has two cars with him. He travels in one and his security guards in the other. He immediately told his security guards to take the gentleman to the hospital and told them not to worry about him and his security.

Even after he reached the studio he kept inquiring about the man's health. He looked very concerned and even told those present at the studio that one should always help others in trouble because the victim could even be our own family member.

"I'm charmed by Shah Rukh Khan" - Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan on being a marketing monster, feeling powerful, doing bench presses, ganging up with Salman on SRK, handling flops and being surrounded by gopis.

What was it about Ghajini that made you want to do it?
I found the Tamil version to be extremely engaging and entertaining. It intrigued me but I made up my mind when I met the director, AR Murugadoss. Frankly, I was completely taken in by his infectious positive energy and childlike excitement.

Regarding the eight packs, has Ghajini been your physically most demanding film -more than Mangal Pandey or Lagaan?
Every film has its own demands but yes, Ghajini was physically daunting because I had to train very hard. I had to keep at it and not lose patience. I had an athletic body but the director wanted me to bulk up with eight packs which was a challenge because I didn't know if I could achieve it. So, in a way, Ghajini made me resilient.

Post 26/11, do you think the timing of its release was unfavorable, especially keeping in view its violent content?
Personally, the attack is far greater and serious an issue for me than the release of my film. That said I was very clear that if the film is good, it'll work. The collections prove it.

Do Ghajini's thumping collections make you feel powerful?
Power doesn't figure in my hierarchy of needs. I won't use the word powerful; rather I'd say it makes me feel happy and blessed. When Taare Zameen Par (TZP) reaches so many people and changes so many lives, I don't feel powerful but gratified.

When did you last feel powerful?
(Thinks hard) I guess when I did my last set of bench press!

If TZP gets you an Oscar, maybe then you'd feel powerful?
(Shrugs) I'm not thinking of the Oscar. Right now, I'm focused on Ghajini and 3 Idiots. If we make it to the final five nominations which will be announced on January 22, then I'll think of the Oscar. I'll let you know what I feel then. (Laughs)

Over the last five years, you've become this monstrous marketing god; can you tell us how and when do you start planning the marketing strategy?
(Laughs) When I plan the marketing strategy, I try to understand the core values of the film. Each film has a unique marketing demand. I have about nine people in my marketing team. We brainstorm together. Our guiding principle is that cinema is a form of mass communication and we have to tell the audience the core values of our film. Once the film is complete, we see it and plan the strategy as to how to prepare the people for this particular film. Today, marketing is an important part of filmmaking. You need to make the audience excited about the film; you need to create the right atmosphere.

But don't you think sometimes you go overboard, like giving the Ghajini haircut to the ushers the day Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi released?
(Shrugs) It was a part of our marketing strategy. We were going to do that two weeks before the release of Ghajini irrespective of the film that was playing. We had initially planned to release Ghajini on October 2 but pushed it back after my leg injury. We would have done the same thing then too. There are two principles that I follow when I market my films: we should honestly represent the film to not mislead the audience and we shouldn't do anything negative. I'm very clear that while I do my best, I should not harm anyone else. As for giving the ushers the Ghajini haircut, we wanted it to be like a trailer. At the end of it, you can do as much publicity as you want but ultimately it's the film that matters.

But there is some undercurrent with SRK, isn't it? You two have been taking digs at each other.
We have high regard for each other. If you look at his interviews, you will see that Shah Rukh only talks about himself, makes digs at others and puts others down. He talks really big but he's a charming guy. I have no hesitation in saying that I'm charmed by SRK. It's just that media takes an extreme stand; it pits us as either enemies or as best friends. As for all our back-and-forth talks, it just shows that both of us have a good sense of humour.

Aren't you and Salman Khan ganging up on SRK, especially with Salman painting your Ghajini look and you sporting his charitable organization's (Being Human) tee at a media event?
(Smiles) We're not ganging up. Both Salman and Shah Rukh are my friends. I didn't ask Salman to paint me; he did it on his own. As for me wearing his tee, if Salman is doing something noble in starting an organization that'll help needy people, I'm happy to support him.

Do you agree you're a control freak?
I'm not a control freak. I'm realistic about my limits. When I act in a film, it's the director who is the boss. It's not my responsibility to control the film. But I'm always there if the director wants any help or suggestion. I just go with the flow.

In the 20 years that you've been here, has there been any shift in your guiding principle of making movies?
Not at all. I've always done films I believe in. I've always had an emotional approach to my work. This is my life so I only want to do those films that I really want to be a part of. I've gone wrong quite a few times especially in the first six months of my career after Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak when I signed every film offered to me. But they were all my decisions. I've learnt quickly from my failures.

How badly does a flop affect you?
I'm very emotionally involved with my films. If ever I have to face a failure, I'd like to take full responsibility for it. Even the failure is mine, I like to value my flops and hold them close to me. I like to mourn my failure and try to learn from it.

What do you want your legacy to be?
I'm very ambitious. I'd like to do work of the level people haven't seen before. I want to raise the bar as an actor, producer and director. I'd like to do films that would live on much after I'm no longer there. Even if someone sees Lagaan 200 years later, he should say, "Who's that guy, yaar?"

Is there any role you haven't done and are dying to attempt?
I really find Mahabharata fascinating. I would love to play Karan, who was 6 '3 and a born warrior. So, I don't think I fit the part physically but emotionally I do. I think the part I suit the best would be that of Krishna. When I was in KG, I had these really chubby cheeks. Girls would find me cute and surround me. I also used to eat makhan all the time so my mom would call me Krishna and the girls my gopis.

When Aamir laughed at Amitabh

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan may have a mutual admiration society and both may bond with each other superbly, but as a child the "Ghajini" star never thought that Big B would make it to the top.

Aamir, who is riding on the success of his latest film "Ghajini," made this disclosure at the unveiling of the latest book on the megastar titled "Bachchanalia" in Mumbai on Saturday (January 3) evening.

Aamir said that since he was born into a family of filmmakers, talks at home were mostly about films and film stars of those days.

"So, we kids at home would also discuss films and even our housemaids would put in their 'knowledgeable' remarks," he said.

He recalled that in 1970 Filmfare magazine had devoted an entire page on those who were struggling to make it big in films and had their photographs.

"We all huddled over it, and from their looks in the photographs, we tried to predict who could make the grade in films and who would not. While pouring over the photographs, when we came to the one with an emaciated face, we kids and our housemaids had a hearty laugh and I mocked at the photograph, saying "Inko dekho. Ye bhi star banana chahata hai!" (Look at him. He also wants to be a star!)," Aamir said and continued coyly: "And that unlikely hopeful was Mr. Bachchan."

His revelation evoked a roar of laughter from the gathering. Amitabh, who was sitting besides his wife Jaya, son Abhishek, daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai and Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, laughed the loudest.

Aamir said that Amitabh could reach the superstardom by dint of his sheer talent alone and he deserved every bit of his success.

"In the film industry today, there are a number of success stories, but most of them are fake. We are yet to see anybody in the industry scaling the height as Mr. Bachchan has done on the strength of his talent alone. Perhaps, nobody will," he said.

"Bachchanalia", the pictorial book, with accompanying text, covers the almost four-decade-long journey of Big B as an actor. Written by journalist Bhawna Somaiya, the book has been published by Osian. It was released at Tata Theatre in the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in south Mumbai.
